A physician-created health framework

The Aging Funnel

A clearer way to discuss the forces shaping health now—and the reserve that may help protect future options.

Why it exists

Aging is not one number.

Health changes through interacting systems, not a single laboratory value or calendar age. Dr. Michael Hall developed the Aging Funnel to organize a complex clinical story into four patient-facing domains: Load, Signal, Fuel and Capacity.

The framework is not a diagnosis, risk calculator or replacement for established medical screening. It is a way for physician and patient to connect history, measurements, function and goals—then decide what deserves attention.

The four domains

01

Load

The demands carried over time: genetics, illness, environment, stress, habits and accumulated exposures.

02

Signal

What the body is communicating through symptoms, biomarkers, hormones, inflammation, imaging and other observations.

03

Fuel

The resources available for maintenance and repair, including nutrition, metabolism and body composition.

04

Capacity

The reserve that supports function: strength, cognition, sleep, recovery, resilience and the ability to adapt.

In practice

From scattered information to a better conversation.

  1. 01

    Establish context

Start with the person: medical history, current concerns, goals, existing care and functional priorities.

  2. 02

    Choose meaningful measures

Select observations and tests because they can clarify a decision—not simply because they are available.

  3. 03

    Follow the trajectory

Review compatible measurements over time and reassess whether the strategy is producing value.
