Vitamin C

Vitamin C

The discovery of vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, in the 1930s set the foundations of modern anti-aging medicine and micro nutrition. Sailors that spent months on the open seas with no access to fresh fruit and vegetables often suffered from scurvy, a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency that led to severe lethargy, seizures, susceptibility to bruising and bleeding and often resulting in death due to malnourishment. While scurvy is extremely rare nowadays, in the past it helped scientists understand the role of fresh food and especially the importance of vitamin C in certain fruit and vegetables. So, having this in mind you might find yourself wondering what exactly does vitamin C do in the human body and why do you need to maintain a high daily intake of it.

Perhaps the best-known use of vitamin C is in its support of the immune system – its efficiency in battling infections such as the common cold and the flu has been known for decades. However, vitamin C is much more than that – being a co-factor in many enzymes that regulate the metabolic processes it has a plethora of roles on so many organs in our body. It is essential for the synthesis and maintenance of collagen, which is the most abundant protein in the human body, comprising around 30% of the total protein content in the body. Collagen can be found in almost all tissues but its content is the highest in the skin, blood vessels, muscles, joint cartilages and bone matrix. Proper vitamin C levels enable the normal function of collagen, which is necessary for healing of skin wounds, and regeneration of damaged blood vessels. In the skin vitamin C reduces the visible wrinkling and that way it slows down premature skin aging. Also, the synthesis of a specific type of collagen, type IV that is responsible for the filtration characteristics in body’s natural membranes is highly dependent on vitamin C, which means that it strongly influences the health of the kidneys, blood vessels and the brain.

The synthesis of other essential substances in the body is in a direct correlation with the levels of vitamin C. For example, the synthesis of carnitine, an amino acid that transports the fatty acids to the mitochondria in order to produce ATP – the cells’ source of energy cannot be done without vitamin C as a co-factor in the enzymatic process. Also, the body needs vitamin C to produce neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, dopamine and noradrenaline. These substances are facilitators of the electrical flow between neurons and nerve cells in the body and in the brain, and they control the body’s ability to respond to the environment, as well as the brain’s ability to think and to remember. Last but not least, vitamin C it is a powerful antioxidant, which means it protects our cells from the harmful free radicals that promote skin aging and are responsible for many diseases, including certain types of cancer that have been connected to damaging of the cell DNA caused by oxidative stress.

As you can see, although it is a very simple ingredient, vitamin C is responsible for the health and well being of so many organs and metabolic processes. Maintaining a high level of vitamin C is a simple but very effective way to protect your health. This is why Dr Hall has designed and patented a special formula available on the market as Ascor-B™ that satisfies your body’s needs for vitamin C. This formula is enriched with BioPerine ® by Sabinsa Corporation – a standardized black pepper extract that improves the absorption and bioavailability of vitamin C, therefore ensuring that your body will fully benefit from it. It contains 95 percent piperine, which has potential health benefits such as stress and weight management support, relieving certain joint conditions and promoting the healing of stomach ulcers. Once ingested, piperine does not only increase the bioavailability of vitamin C, it also helps in maximizing the effects of beta-carotene, curcumin, selenium and vitamin B6. And may also enhance the assimilation of amino acids.

Its high potency means that taking 2 capsules twice a day (unless recommended otherwise by your health practitioner) is enough to meet the daily-recommended intake of vitamin C, and one bottle supplies you for a whole month. The capsules are vegetarian, gluten and GMO-free and they contain no artificial coloring, sweeteners or preservatives. We at Hall Longevity Clinic believe that products containing simple and natural ingredients are the best choice for maintaining your health, and we remain available to you for any consultation or advice you might need considering Ascor-B™ or our other healthcare products.
